May The second "official" combined police patrol program developed by the 18th MP Brigade, involved the Vietnamese National Police [Canh Sat] and Vietnamese Military Police [Quan Canh], and was initiated on Highway QL4, known as the Peoples Road. It involved the area from the Saigon city limits through the Mekong Delta to the Can Tho Ferry. This formal written agreement, signed by the Canh Sat Director General, Provost Marshal General [ARVN] and BG Gustafson, Provost Marshal General Vietnam, provided for the establishment of combined police centers at My Tho, Vinh Long, and Tan An. |
A Combined radio relay station was also established at Cai Lay. The 188th combined with Vietnamese National Police, and Military Police, began combined patrols to open crucial Highway QL4 to the heavy flow of traffic which has made it the lifeline of the Mekong Delta. On the 200 mile long highway passes the commerce of the Delta people, and for this reason it is called Dan Lo, "The People's Road". |
The combined patrols utilize the V100 Armored Commando Cars and MP Gun Jeeps to repel and silence the frequent enemy small arms and mortar attacks. In addition they provide security for the engineer units called upon to repair the roadway and disarm enemy land mines placed to disrupt and block the flow of traffic. |
