Easter Riot At The USARV Stockade On Long Binh Post
Prisoner tensions were running high due to racial strife at the stockade. The facility was not over crowded but approximately 90% of the prisoners were black and the other 10% were white and hispanic. There had been previous racial fights, confrontations and one rape in the months that preceded the riot.
Wanted: Names and stories of the MP reaction force or confindment staff, and photographs during, and immediately after the riot on Easter Sunday. Please use the Email link at the top of this page to notify the History Project Manager.
The stockade consisted of three separate compounds that housed the prisoner population in canvas tents. The compounds were A, B & C. They were separated from each other by a single gate and from the administrative compound by a main gate.

On the evening in question just before dark CPL Richard W. Burch, 557th MP Company (Guard) [95th MP Battalion] noticed that many of the prisoners were milling around in their compound yards and it appeared to him that something was in the air.

All the MP guards were extra vigilant due to the ongoing tension in the facility. Each prisoner compound had six MPs assigned to it during the shift.

CPL Burch was working the gate at his compound when a white prisoner walked up to him and warned him to get out because there was going to be a rush for the gate. He warned his other partners just before the prisoners charged the gate. They managed to clear all the MP's safely from the compounds before the prisoners could get to them.

The prisoners were armed with make shift weapons consisting of bunk adaptors and tooth brushes with razor blades fastened onto them along with any other items they could wield as clubs. The prisoners from the three compounds joined forces at the main gate to the administrative compound that was now being defended by the 557th MP guards. The guards started throwing tear gas canisters into the yards to disperse the prisoners and break up their assault.

The 720th MP Battalion was located just across the road from the stockade and their reaction force was summoned to quell the riot. The prisoner assault on the administrative compound gate became disorganized due to the tear gas defense allowing time for the Battalion Reaction Force (including elements of the 615th MP Company) to form a skirmish line and force the prisoners back at bayonet point before any further damage could be done.

The heavy volume of tear gas was blown by the wind into the compound of the 24th Evacuation Hospital so the Reaction Force was ordered not to use any additional canisters.

When the MPs entered the compounds they took into custody the leaders of the riot who were removed from the area to a separate closed confinement area.

Due to the quick reaction by the 557th MP guards and the 720th MP Battalion Reaction Force, further damage to the facility was prevented and deaths and injuries were kept to a minimum.

One prisoner died and a second was hospitalized from an overdose of Malaria pills during a suicide attempt. Another prisoner was hospitalized from a minor bayonet puncture wound from the Battalion skirmish line, one (the leader of the riot) was shot in the chest, circumstances unknown, one other was seriously cut on the leg by another prisoner, and others suffered only minor injuries and irritation from the tear gas. There were no reports of any critical MP injuries.

The riot lasted only a period of approximately 4-5 hours before full order was restored to the stockade. Members of the battalion would be assigned for temporary duty at the facility to assist the 557th for several months afterwards.

Edited from an interview of CPL Richard W. Burch, 557th MP Company, USARV, Long Binh Post, Vietnam, October 1966 to November 1967, and LTC Kenneth Weinstein, Commanding Officer, 720th MP Battalion, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, 15 January 1967-1 July 1967.
