Tanh worked in the local Popular Forces Platoon and Outpost #3 in the Village of An Hoa Hung, Vietnam. In 1967 under Operation STABILIZE he was occasionally assigned as a scout and interpreter to the 720th MP Battalion, Ambush Teams. During several Viet Cong attacks on the outpost shift change gun jeep in late 1967 and early 1968 Tanh proved his dedication and displayed no fear while defending his post. He was one of the most personable PFs ever assigned to scout interpreter duties. He always had a big smile on his face and was so well liked by the members of C Company that worked at Outpost #3 that they tried several times to obtain permission to have him accompany them on an R&R. Unfortunately the U.S. and RVN military wouldn't go along with the request. |
On ambush duties he remained personable, outgoing, dedicated and aggressive, earning the respect of the new group of MPs from B Company that he worked with. Once the PFs were phased out of ambush duties by the Regional Forces he remained assigned at Outpost #3. On the morning of 25 February 1969 while I was taking my last ride out of the TAOR in the Battalion 3/4 ton truck he was the last PF I talked with. As we slowed to approach the outpost while returning to Long Binh Post I saw Tanh and shouted "I'm going home," as the truck passed him. He said something back, unfortunately I couldn't hear him, but I did watch him waive goodbye to me until the truck turned left onto the highway. As usual he was smiling. Journal Of CPL Thomas T. Watson, B Company, 720th MP Battalion, 89th MP Group, 18th MP Brigade, March 1968-March 1969. |
