     The name, William D. Kain, Private First Class, 720th MP Battalion, is listed on a memorial monument located at the Manila American National Cemetery, Philippines.

     Research of his personnel files at the National Archives in St. Louis, MO revealed most records of his service were destroyed in a fire on 12 July 1973. They were able to identify him as a member of C Company and his service time as 30 November 1939 through 12 November 1944, that he was Army National Guard, and his family resided in Kingston, New York.

Awards incomplete (based on available information and standards for era): Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, World War II Service Lapel Button  ("Ruptured Duck").

     Further research of his military service through the Department Of The Army, Human Resources Command revealed that PFC Kain, age 31, died in British (Papua) New Guinea of "severe agranulocytosis" (a disease in which the production of granulated white blood cells by the bone marrow is impaired), and was buried on 13 November 1944 in grave #575 at the (temporary) U.S. Armed Forces Cemetery, Finschhafen, #1, New Guinea. 

     On 15 September 1948 PFC Kain's remains were disinterred and held for transport for final internment on 23 June 1949, at Fort McKinley Cemetery (Manila American National Cemetery), Philippines.
